Chapter 4 Guiding Questions

1. I don't know much about stars and their life cycle. I do know that stars die. The element hydrogen is used in the fusion of the sun to create helium. Stars do not fuse elements passed iron because they are not old enough. Most stars burn hydrogen and helium as they travel down the periodic table, they can only reach iron. I refer to it as stairs within a building. the highest amount of steps that each staircase has can only be less than 26.

2. Jupiter is such an interesting planet because it is very gaseous. Jupiter contains so many elements in so many forms. The planet also contains metallic hydrogen in liquid form that acts like water here on earth. Jupiter also contains hydrogen and helium which mean sit could have been a star. Jupiter even has a mysterious red spot that is roughly the size of 3 earths!

3. Clair Patterson used the 3 common leads 204, 206, and 207. Two of these lead are broken down with uranium. He saw how uranium decayed and eventually traced back to zero. Most scientists agree that the universe is about 14 billion years old even though no one was around to prove it because they use elements to trace back their origins.
