Chapter 7 Summary

Chapter 7 focused on the impact that science had during the mid 1900s. Specifically it focused on the creation of new elements not found naturally on earth. The place where the most synthesized elements were was U.C Berkeley. They developed many elements and named it after monumental things such as Seaborgium (named after Glenn Seaborg) and Berkelium (named after the city of Berkeley). The synthesizing of the elements was very hard to do because the elements were so unstable, their live span was almost zero. The synthesizing of elements was made using the alpha-bombing experiments and now every element after californium is synthesized.
The cold war played a major role on the scientific progress in Russia. For example, Joseph Stalin, ruler of the former Soviet Union has strict control under art, literature, science, among other things. His halt to scientific progress led to some decline in the scientific discoveries Russia made. Stalin however, did allow Trofim Lysenko to do some biological research. Russia who then progressed even more and heard about the making of elements in the United States, decided to try to synthesize their own elements. Although some of the elements made were incorrect, the development of scientific discoveries during the Cold War was strikingly incredible.
